This morning Vibe Magazine revealed to the world their latest cover for their June/July issue. The title “Meet your new role models.
<<<<<Take a look.
So if you didn’t know, Star Jones recently started a campaign to boycott reality shows Love and Hip Hop, Basketball Wives, and Real Housewives of Atlanta because of the violence and the negative portrayal of women to our younger generation of girls. I feel like a boycott isn’t the only solution and the producers wouldn’t continue to air these shows if we weren’t watching them, so that’s neither here nor there.
My problem lies in these women being portrayed as role models to young girls. A role model is someone who leads by example in such a way that their actions, success, behavior should be imitated by other people especially young people. I’m not knocking these women, but I can think of a whole lot of women that should be listed as role models rather than Kandi, Tamar, Evelyn, and Chrissy. Does role model behavior glorify drama, degrading of others, disrespectful language, and promiscuity? Young girls are seeing the money, expensive clothes and 6 inch red bottoms, and saying I want to be like that, the meaner the better. This is why it is so important for us as parents and mentors to provide good examples of role models to young girls and show them that you don’t have to degrade yourself and fight to be successful and to feel beautiful. Some say, “It’s just television” but teenagers are watching more than adults are, and they are modeling their behavior after it.So, watch your actions and continue being a women of integrity, because you never know who is watching.
“Each of us, famous or infamous, is a role model for somebody, and if we aren’t, we should behave as though we are — cheerful, kind, loving, courteous. Because you can be sure someone is watching and taking deliberate and diligent notes.”
